Unit Committees at the Akatsi North District have been charged to be up and doing in supporting the assembly to achieve its developmental targets.
The District Chief Executive of the area, James Gunu who made the call at the meeting with members of the committees reminded them that the unit committees remain root and foundation for the local governance structure without which the decentralization concept will be useless.
He asked them not to be instruments for district assembly elections only but take centre stage in the developmental agenda of the district, serving as agents of development by liaising with chiefs and other stakeholders and the District Assembly.
Mr. Gunu particularly called for their support in;
1- Revenue generation
2- Maintenance of good sanitation
3- Mobilizing the citizens for communal labour
4- Birth and death registration
5- Sensitizing the citizens to obtain building permits among others.
He appealed to them to act as security for the assembly to check haphazard developments in their communities so that the district is not faced in future with issues of slams among other related issues.
In a related, DCE announced plans to remove all mad persons from the street and called on the unit committees to identify such persons and collaborate with the social welfare department of the assembly for action on them. As such, the DCE said personnel at the Dzalele Barrier have been mandated to stop and prevent any mad person from entering the district.
He also directed the Presiding Member, Mr. Patrick Kwame Ahiabu to make sure unit committee members are invited to take part in assembly meetings so that they will be part of decision making.
The PM on his part commended the DCE for the initiative in making the unit committees more useful and urged the committees to cooperate with the assembly for accelerated development.
