Mr. Francis Korankye -Sakyi, District Chief Executive for Twifo-Heman-Lower Denkyira, has appealed to NGOs and the Donor Support Fund to assist the Assembly to undertake its street naming exercise.

He said equipment to be used for the exercise was so expensive that the Assembly cannot afford to buy it outright.

Mr Korankye- Sakyi said this on Tuesday when he inaugurated the Assembly’s Street Addressing Team (SAT) at Twifo Heman hoped the intervention of the Donor Support Fund would ensure success of the exercise.

The 13-member team is made up of 13 decentralized departments as well as  Nana Amoah Sasraku III, the Omanhene of Twifo-Heman Traditional Area.

Mr. Korankye-Sakyi said “as planning authorities we have the responsibility for special planning to primarily address the issue of orderly human settlement development.”

The DCE said though legislations and acts had been promulgated for Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to carry out the above function, no stringent effort was being made by most district assemblies to carry out these basic functions.

He said in line with the planning mandate of MMDAs therefore, streets were to be named and properties including open spaces and undeveloped parcels of land numbered to serve as a basis for assigning addresses to facilitate easy identification of places.

He said it was in this regard  that the President launched the national operation guidance on street naming and property addressing policy and directed the assemblies to wake up to their core responsibilities and functions and asked all MMDAs to ensure the  completion of the project within 18months.

Mr. Korankye-Sakyi said as a new District it was incumbent on it to abide by the President’s directives and carry out this instruction to the fullest, adding “we cannot afford to fail”.

Mr. Obed Agyapong, District Physical Planning official and leader of the team briefed the members on their functions and urged them to work hard to meet the deadline.
