His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama has said solving the energy crisis that has bedeviled the country was his number one priority.
He said since he took over the administration of the country he had not rested over energy issues and took personal interest in any measure targeted at resolving it.
He said this at the inauguration of a161/34.5/11.kv GRIDCo Substation in Kintampo.
The President noted that, the project would in future serve as an interconnection point for the proposed 330 KV line from Kumasi to the northern part of Ghana. He said in spite of all the challenges, Ghana was still touted as the country with the highest electricity connectivity in Africa.
He noted that, the recent Akan greetings which has been changed into a laughter cliché “ye mamo dumso….yaa mahama’’ would soon be a thing of the past. He further added that, improvement in energy supply would enhance job creation in the country.
The Chief Executive Officer of GRIDCo Mr Charles Darku noted that, the substation would serve as the point of integration of power from the Bui hydroelectric power project into the national grid. He said the substation would supply power to communities between Kintampo and Bamboi, which hitherto were not served with electricity.
The Minister of Energy, Mr Emmanuel Armah Kofi Boah said the project was undertaken at a cost of $29million provided from the government of Ghana under a $350million facility from the US Exim Bank and added that, all these were measures to ensure energy security in the next years to come.
He said the government was working around the clock to expand access to electricity to the mass of the people and called on GRIDCo to continually work with discipline and hardwork make this a reality.
The ceremony was well attended by chiefs and people of Kintampo.
