Mr. Kwame Fei, Berekum Municipal Fire Officer, has appealed to Ghanaians, particularly house owners, to change electrical wires of their buildings at least every 20 years to prevent domestic fires.
He noted that most domestic fire outbreaks were caused by over-aged electrical wires, inappropriate use of electrical appliances and faulty electrical gadgets.
Mr Fei in an interview with GNA at Brekum, urged the people to employ qualified electricians to wire their buildings since improper wiring of houses also caused domestic fire.
“There are several other factors to the outbreak of domestic fires in the country but the situation will minimize if such basic requirements are taken into consideration”, he said.
Mr. Fei asked people operating at market places to handle fire with care and to avoid cooking at such places.
He advised against the keeping of fuel and inflammable materials at homes, offices and market places adding that such places should have fire fighting equipment.
