More that 395 people have been rendered homeless at Amantin near Atebubu in the Brong Ahafo Region and property worth over GHC 67,000 destroyed following a rainstorm that hit the area.

More that 395 people have been rendered homeless at Amantin near Atebubu in the Brong Ahafo Region and property worth over GHC 67,000 destroyed following a rainstorm that hit the area.

Reports say the torrential rains which lasted for about an hour was preceded with strong winds that ripped off the roofs of more than 60 houses.

The affected people are said to be putting up with friends and relatives as they await help form government and other charity organisations and individuals.

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has since assessed the  extent of the damage caused and is to liaise with the relevant organisations in seeking relief items for the victims.

According to the District Coordinator of NADMO, Richard Obeng Baah, three schools were badly affected by the rains and has caused a disruption in academic work. They are the SDA School, the English/Arabic Primary School and the R/C Primary School..
 
Relief items such as mattresses, blankets, nylon mats, packets of roofing sheets, roofing nails as well as 30 pieces of dual desks to resettle the affected people and schools.

The District NADMO boss has however warned that there was going to be a possible major disaster in the areas as heavy rains are expected to start within the next few months.

According to him, it is a perennial occurrence, but was quick to admit that the current one was quite severe.
