In the urban area, particularly Zuarungu Township, potable water supply is managed by the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), with water sourced from Gowrie in the Bongo District.
In the rural communities, water supply delivery is overseen by the District Assembly, working in collaboration with the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA). This partnership ensures the provision, maintenance, and monitoring of water facilities across the district.
The district currently has a total of 172 boreholes, comprising both mechanized systems and hand pump–fitted boreholes. Out of this number, 161 are functional, while 11 are non-functional and require rehabilitation. Additionally, the district has 10 hand-dug wells, of which four are fitted with hand pumps, while the remaining wells are without pumps.
A survey conducted by the Community Water and Sanitation Agency in 2020 revealed that Bolgatanga East District ranks among the best-performing districts in the Upper East Region in terms of water coverage, achieving an impressive 88.59 percent coverage rate. This milestone reflects sustained efforts by the District Assembly and its partners to improve access to safe and reliable water for both urban and rural populations.
The District Assembly remains committed to maintaining existing water infrastructure and addressing non-functional facilities to further enhance water access and sanitation services across the district.
