This, he believes, will empower cities to learn from one another, foster collaboration, and implement innovative solutions for sustainable development.
Mayor Allotey articulated this vision during his participation in the inaugural Urban 20 (U20) Mayors Summit, hosted on African soil.
The summit brought together leaders from twenty prominent global cities, including Ahmedabad, Freetown, Rotterdam, and Amsterdam.
Co-hosted by Johannesburg and Tshwane, the three-day event was convened by C40 Cities and the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) with the core objective of amplifying the role of cities in tackling pressing global issues such as climate change and sustainable urbanization.

Following the U20 Sherpa Meeting held in Tshwane in June 2025, this summit specifically focused on how local governments can spearhead an equitable and resilient urban green transition. Mayor Allotey highlighted the crucial importance of fostering collaboration not only across borders but also across time, ensuring the institutionalization of lessons learned from both past and present city leaders.
He stressed that cities like Accra are in urgent need of direct access to climate finance to effectively address the escalating impacts of climate change.
In his recommendations, Mayor Allotey called for an increase in climate finance specifically for African cities. He also advocated for the establishment of robust frameworks that promote inclusive urban development and the creation of regular peer-to-peer exchange mechanisms among city leaders.
These measures, he posited, are essential for effectively addressing systemic urban challenges and making significant contributions to the global green transition.
This initiative aims to enhance policy continuity and accelerate progress in climate action, basic services, and inclusive growth for cities worldwide.
