Local authorities within the Greater Accra Region have over the years been battling with issues relating to collecting and dumping of waste due to lack of landfill sites.

Most of the landfill sites in the Region have become full and closed down with the exception of the one at Kpone in the Kpone-Katamanso District near Tema.

For almost a month now, refuse generated by residents in Accra have not been collected hence various calls placed to the Accra Metropolitan Assembly to call the refuse collection companies to order.

According to the Mayor of Accra, Dr. Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije on Citi Fm’s Breakfast Show on Monday, the situation has been as a result of lack of permanent landfill sites within the region.

In solving this problem however, the Mayor said the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning has accepted a proposal for a loan facility for the AMA to construct an engineered landfill site.

An engineered landfill site allows final disposal of solid waste in a secure manner by minimizing the impacts on the environment.

He said for the first time in the History of Accra, an engineered landfill site with a recycling programme will be constructed on a 1000acre land acquired for the project.

He said 30 new refuse trucks will also be dispatched within the Metropolis to collect refuse adding that the trucks would be punctual and efficient in their duties.

Dr. Vanderpuije added that waste bins would also be distributed to every household and waste containers be placed at vantage points to fast track refuse collection.
