The Ashaiman Municipal Assembly (ASHMA) is offering temporary structure permits to encourage owners of illegal structures and signboards to conform to the Assemblys bylaws and conventions.
The measure would bring about orderliness in the Municipality and also generate revenue for developmental projects, Mr Isaac Lamptey, Head of Works Department, ASHMA, has said.
In an interview with Ghana News Agency, he said the permit grants started last year but had to be halted for residents to be educated on the regulations and the process of acquiring them.
Mr Lamptey said Assembly members were used as lead educators after they were tutored on the temporary structure permit and its processes.
The assembly members moved to their various electoral areas and mobilised, educated and encouraged the people on the permit issue and, I am positive that people in 13 electoral areas have so far been sensitised on their responsibilities, he said.
Mr Lamptey said the, National building regulation LI630, 1996 mandates the Assembly to ensure that temporary structure permit is granted anyone who wants to put up any structure or mount a signboard, adding that the Assembly is responsible for the authorisation of any building structure.
He said places or lands which are not ready to be used by their owners could be acquired by the Assembly for any project.
According to him, the permit which was for one year is renewable but not transferable.
The charges range from 10 feet and below cost GH 50, 11 feet to 20 feet structure, GH 100 and 20 feet and above GH 120, he said.
Mr Lamptey said one has to apply for a permit at the Assembly’s premises after which the place would be inspected before the grant.
