Authorities of the Shama Health Centre in the Western Region had made urgent appeal to the government to expedite work on a polyclinic project to enable the staff to execute their job efficiently.

Dr Christabel Aygapah, medical doctor in charge of the centre noted that, the construction of the polyclinic started years ago but had come to a standstill, thus compelling the health practitioners, nurses and paramedics to work under constraints.

We have hard working qualified staff, but unfortunately the centre does not have wards and other facilities to admit patients, resulting in detaining patients and referring emergency cases, Dr Aygapah told newsmen.

She made these remarks when the Shama Community Cooperative Credit Union Limited (SHACCU) presented various items worth GH4,000 to support the centre.

She regretted that hospital equipment like X-ray machines, surgical apparatus and others needed to enhance their work, had for years been kept under lock and key at the centre due to lack of space.

Doctor Agyapah stated that the project when completed would help upgrade the centre to the status of a polyclinic.

Mr Joseph Anokwafo Arthur, Board chairman of SHACCU led managers of the credit union to present cabinet, swivel chairs, refrigerator and ceiling fan to support work at the psychiatric unit of the centre.

Mr Arthur stated that the gesture formed part of the companys corporate social responsibilities and commended staff of the centre, who were working in the face of challenges, saying the SHACCU wishes to share its token profit with you as a morale booster.

He said in its eight years of existence, the SHACCU had provided street lights and supported some schools in the community.
