The Nanumba North District Assembly in the northern region may conduct business without a Presiding Member for the next two years.
This is largely as a result of what appears to be a power struggle between assembly members who are sharply divided on party lines.
Though, the district assembly concept is non partisan, assembly members of the Nanumba North District Assembly could not elect their Presiding Member at the just ended inaugural ceremony.
Two contestants, Abdulai Yakubu, assembly man for the Jilo electoral area in Bimbila and the immediate past assembly man for Dipa electoral area Onaja Jacques, failed to meet the Electoral Commission’s majority vote.
Citi News gathered that Onaja Jacques was rejected because of his loyalty to the ruling NDC just like his archrival Abdulai Yakubu whose allegiance to the NPP cannot be disputed.
But reports have it that government and NDC functionaries in the district are allegedly trying to impose their favorite candidate Onaja Jacques on members of the assembly as their Presiding Member.
Reliable sources at the assembly disclosed that Abdulai Yakubu has been forced to succumb to Onaja Jacques or lose his job as a health worker in the Volta region.
Majority of the assembly members expressed their readiness to fiercely resist any attempt to impose Onaja Jacques on them as their Presiding Member against their democratic right at the ballot.
