Police in Bawku have confirmed the death of two Ghanaians following gun battles with some natives of Burkina Faso.
The clashes were said to have erupted after two Ghanaians from the Busanga ethnic group in an attempt to cross the Burkina Faso border on Thursday failed to pay levies charged by the Burkinabes.
Joy News’ Upper East Regional correspondent Joseph Osei said the Ghanaians came back to organise, and arm themselves before going back to retaliate, leading to the fierce gun battle and the death of the two people.
He said the military were unable to retrieve the two bodies because the incident took place outside the territory of Ghana.
According to the Municipal Chief Executive of the area Abdulai Musah, the Burkinabe governor of the region where the incident took place has expressed regrets and asked for the bodies to be retrieved.
"The police are trying to organize themselves and bring back the body to Ghana," he said.
Abdulai Musah insisted the scuffle was an isolated incident and had nothing to do with the turmoil in the region.
He said the police have begun further investigations into the matter.
