The Ministry of Food and Agriculture has predicted a bumper harvest of maize, rice and soyabeans in the Northern Region by the end of this year’s farming season.

This is as a result of the cultivation of these crops in large quantities in the West Gonja District after the ministry had earlier in the year acquired lands for the farmers as part of the government’s efforts to revive the agricultural sector and also give employment to the youth.

The ministry privided the farmers with tractors, planters, fertilizers, other farm logistics and extension services to undertake the project so as to enable them to make enough yield andreturns.

Consequently, more than 486 hectres of maize and an approximately 47.2 hectresof rice have been cultivated in Damango, while in Daboya, 96 hectres of soyabeans have also been cultivated.

To access the progress of the project, the sector minister, Mr. Kwesi Ahwoi, paid a working visit to the farms in Damango.

The visit was his second to the area after he had early on visited and acquired the land, with permission from the Yagbon Wura, Bawa Doshi and the Damango Wura, Tutumba II.

The District Chief Executive for West Gonja, Mr. Adam Mutawakilu, the Member of Parliament for Damago/ Daboya Mr. Sammy Wusah and the West Gonja District Director of Agriculrure, Mr. Francis Nuotaba took the minister round the farms.

Mr. Ahwoi assured the farmers that some inputs, such as shell removers, bags and combine harvesters, would be provided to enable them to harvest and store the crops.
