This year’s ‘My First Day at School’ in the Eastern Region took the form of community durbars where dignitaries shared ideas with the citizenry.

At one of such durbars at the Ofoase RC Park, the District Chief Executive of Akyem Mansa, Mr Tom Budu, called on the chiefs and people in the district to channel their resources into the education of their children instead of investing in land litigation.

He said very soon, their wealth would not be measured in the size of their farms but the number of their children they had supported to completed tertiary education.

He called on the people in the district to stop the partisan discrimination and unite for the total development of the district.

The DCE assured them that ‘his doors are opened to all citizens of the district’ irrespective of their party affiliation.

The Member of Parliament for the area, Mr Oppong Kissi, called on heads of schools in the district to make available the best classrooms in their schools for use as kindergarten and Primary one to encourage the young children to  attend school.

He regretted that often it is the worst classrooms that are allocated to the pre-school classes and that pupils who are starting school are in some cases  those pupils who are made to sit under trees on the school compound when there are not enough classrooms.

Mr Kissi explained that, such developments end up discouraging the younger pupils from attending school regularly.

Later, the Eastern Regional Minister, Mr Samuel Ofosu Ampofo and the Regional Director of Education, Mrs Rene Boakye Boateng distributed caps, pencils, exercise books, chocolates and ice creams to pupils of Ofoase Roman Catholic “A” primary and kindergarten school, Ofoase Kuma L/A kindergarten and primary school and Ofoase Zongo Islamic primary school.

Earlier at Akyim Takyiman, the Regional Minister, Mr Ampofo called on men to invest in the education of their children instead of investing their lot in the acquisition of brides.

He also appealed to women to stop wanton buying of mourning cloths and use those resources to support the education of their children.

The Regional Director of Education, Mrs Boateng, appealed to parents to provide their children with breakfast every day before sending them to school.

She explained that, most children who are given money by their parents to buy end up spending on sweets after which they become hungry and loose concentration during lesions.
