The Wenchi Municipal Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT),  Mr. Joseph Ankomah has advised teachers to pursue further education to update their knowledge and skills to enhance their competence.

He noted that some teachers had not had any refresher training after the completion of teacher training programme and said “Today’s education involves a lot and needs teachers who can perform well to meet current educational standards”.

Mr. Ankomah was addressing more than 500 delegates from Wenchi and Tain districts at the association’s third quadrennial conference, at Wenchi.

The meeting reviewed reports of the two districts and the association’s vision for the year, and adopted strategies to achieve its objectives.

Mr. Ankomah, who is also GNAT Secretary for Tain District, said that some teachers were not abreast with new teaching skills and knowledge, contributing largely to poor academic performance of students in some deprived areas.

He appealed to government to improve the salaries of teachers so that they could further their education, saying “quality education depended on qualified teachers and there was the need for the authorities to support teachers to enable them to upgrade their skills and knowledge.”

Mr. Ankomah also suggested that government provides credit and loan facilities to teachers who intended to update the knowledge and skills and to make the untrained Teachers Diploma in Basic Education programme compulsory for all teachers in the category.
