Obaapanyin Afua Gyekyewaa, a 90 year-old woman, and her four- year- old grandson, Richard Obeng, were pronounced dead on arrival at the Enyiresi Government Hospital, after the room they were sleeping in collapsed and fell on them at Tumfa near Kwabeng, in the Atiwa District.
Three other people, who sustained various degrees of injuries, were also rushed to the same hospital but were later transferred to the Koforidua Central Hospital for treatment.
The tragedy was as a result of a heavy rainstorm, which hit the farming community, resulting in the total collapse of over 70 houses and others having their roofs ripped-off.
The disaster has rendered more than 300 people homeless compelling them to lodge temporary with relatives and friends, while waiting for some form of relief from the government.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, at Kwabeng, on the Atiwa district Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Mr Robert Darkwa Pope confirmed the incident and described it as very serious.
He said they had not experienced such a disastrous situation in the area over the past 30 years and attributed it to illegal feeling of trees in the surrounding areas.
Mr Darkwa said he had already visited the area to assess the damage, which ran into thousands of Ghana cedis, and called on philanthropists and NGOs to go to the aid of the victims since the government alone could not solve the problem.
He said a report had already been sent to the district coordinating director for the necessary action to be taken to provide some relief items to the affected persons.
The Assembly member for the area, Ms Comfort Ofosu Nyarko in an interview, described the situation as unfortunate and called for urgent support to save the victims from the trauma they were going through.
The Member of Parliament for the area, Mr Kwasi Ankamah,
who visited the area promised to assist the affected persons with mattresses, buckets, cups and other items.
He donated GH¢60.00 to the family of the deceased.
