Mayor Allotey, who was accompanied by the Coordinating Director, Mr. Douglas N.K Annoful and other directors from the Assembly visited the market on Tuesday, August 20, as part of his routine monitoring exercise in the city.
Speaking during the tour of the market Hon. Allotey announced plans to renovate the market to make it more conducive for trading activities.
He assured traders that faulty streetlights in and around the market would soon be repaired, stressing that President John Dramani Mahama had released over 4,000 streetlights to Members of Parliament for distribution across communities.
Touching on revenue mobilisation, the Mayor explained that the tolls collected from traders were the main source of funds used to address challenges within the market.
“The tickets we issue to you are what we use to fix some of the problems you face here. We have to protect you and make sure you have a conducive environment to carry out your businesses and we can only do this when you pay your tolls daily,” he stated.
He directed that additional collectors be deployed to the market to ensure efficiency and cautioned revenue officers against acts of sabotage, warning that he would not hesitate to dismiss anyone found undermining the process.
The Mayor reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that the Tuesday Market remains a safe and orderly environment for trading, adding that the government's planned renovations would address long-standing concerns of the traders.
