The Ga Central Municipal Health Directorate has commemorated this year’s World Malaria Day with a colorful ceremony held at the forecourt of the Anyaa Polyclinic under the themes: “Driven to End Malaria: Now We Can, Now We Can Build a Healthy Ghana” and “Uniting for a Malaria-Free Ghana: The Role of Professional Pest Control in Public Health.”

The event brought together health professionals, environmental experts, traditional leaders, stakeholders, and community members to reflect on progress made in malaria prevention and discuss strategies to eliminate the disease completely.

This year’s celebration highlighted major gains in malaria control, including the introduction of new vaccines, improved diagnostic systems, and the use of next-generation insecticide-treated mosquito nets, while also calling for increased funding and urgent collective action to eradicate malaria in Ghana.

Welcoming participants to the event, Edwina Appiah stated that the gathering aimed at sharing successes chalked in the fight against malaria while identifying existing challenges. She urged residents and stakeholders to actively support malaria prevention efforts by observing proper sanitation and environmental cleanliness practices.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Ga Central Municipality, Emmanuel Adotey Allotey, stressed that malaria eradication requires collective effort from all residents and institutions.

According to him, keeping surroundings clean through regular desilting of gutters, clearing of overgrown weeds, and proper waste disposal remains essential in reducing mosquito breeding grounds and preventing malaria outbreaks.

Hon. Emmanuel Adotey Allotey further highlighted sanitation interventions being implemented by the Assembly, including the enforcement of sanitation by-laws and collaboration with waste collection companies to ensure regular refuse collection across households within the municipality.

“The eradication of malaria is a collective effort, and it is not to be left to our health workers alone,” the MCE emphasized while encouraging residents to participate actively in communal clean-up exercises.

A representative of the National Malaria Elimination Programme, Otubia Owusu-Akrofi, also delivered a presentation on malaria prevention and control.

He advised residents to seek proper testing before taking malaria medication instead of self-medicating and urged patients diagnosed with malaria to complete their full dosage while maintaining clean surroundings to support prevention efforts.

Meanwhile, Joseph Edmund, speaking on behalf of the Environmental Protection Agency, announced the inauguration of DAPSAG within the municipality.

He explained that DAPSAG partners with both local and international organizations to strengthen the capacity of pest control service providers in Ghana and cautioned residents against engaging unlicensed fumigation operators.

The event climaxed with the official inauguration of DAPSAG by the Municipal Chief Executive and other dignitaries as part of broader efforts to strengthen public health and environmental safety within the municipality.
