Lack of offices in some Districts in Brong-Ahafo is a challenge to the performance of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) in the Region.

Mr Simon Gaga, acting Regional Director who told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Wednesday in Sunyani said the Commission had only 13 offices out of 27 Districts in the Region.

He stated that was not only making it difficult for victims of abuse to seek for redress but was also hampering efforts to sensitize and educate the general public about their fundamental human rights and freedoms.

Mr Gaga stated some victims had to travel from afar to report their cases but sometimes abandoned them because they could not afford the cost of transportation involved, besides the frustrations victims went through to be able to access services in available offices.

He said the Region recorded 2,692 cases in 2013, saying 2,595 of them were human rights abuses, 48 administrative injustices whilst five were corruption cases.

Mr Gaga added while 2,608 of the cases had been closed, 416 of them were pending.

Among the cases recorded under human rights were children and womens rights abuses, property rights, economic and social rights, civil and political rights, administrative injustices and corruption cases.

Mr Gaga said Act 456 of the 1992 Constitution enjoined the Commission to educate Ghanaians about their rights, administrative injustice and corruption.

He said the educational programmes centering on social, cultural, civic and constitutional rights were being facilitated by the various radio stations in the Regions.

To facilitate the educational activities and make them more comprehensive to the general public, the Commission had adopted strategies such as lectures, presentations, focus group discussion and quiz contest for students, Mr Gaga said.

He said in achieving its objectives, the Commission also organised educational campaigns for teachers and students by setting up human rights clubs in some Junior and Senior High Schools in the Regions.

Mr Gaga therefore advised the general public to co-operate with the Commission in seeking justice and redress of all cases of CHRAJ reported.
