Government has indicated its plans of improving the level of sanitation across the length and breadth of the country to mitigate avoidable diseases that disturb its people as well as to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) target on sanitation.

A Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr. Kwadwo Agyekum, who made the revelation in Accra at a ceremony to kick start the Ghana Netherlands Water and Sanitation Project (GNWP), last week highlighted a number of sanitation projects and programmes which were either being implemented or due for implementation in the country.

“These include the Accra Sewerage Improvement Project, the Accra Sewer and Storm Drainage Alleviation Programme and the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area Water and Sanitation Project, the GNWP, among others,” he added.

He said the Ministry has also started building the capacities of Assemblies, particularly the Environmental Health and Sanitation Departments as well as providing them with the required logistics and resources to position them strategically to facilitate the implementation of sanitation programmes across the Country.

On the Ghana Netherlands Water and Sanitation Programme, Mr. Agyekum further added that the Ministry and the Embassy of the Kingdom of Netherlands has therefore procured Technical Assistant Consultants to develop work plans and come up with a framework for effective implementation of project activities.

In all 5 Metropolitan and Municipalities (MMAs) have been selected to benefit from the GNWP. They include Cape Coast Metropolitan, Ga Central, Ga South, Ga West and Komenda Edina Eguafo Abirem Municipalities in the Central and Greater Accra Regions.
