Municipal Chief Executive for the Ga East Municipal Assembly, John Kwao Sackey has indicated that the reconstruction of the Dome market remains one of the flagship projects to the assembly.

He said following the creation of the La Nkwantanang/Madina Municipal Assembly which was curved from the Ga East Municipal Assembly, the only major market left is the Dome Market and the assembly is doing everything possible to give the market a facelift to enhance economic activities in the municipality.

According to the MCE, there are some underlining challenges that have to be addressed before everything can move on smoothly. He said the assembly is not the actual owner of the land on which the market is situated but stated that enough progress has been made in negotiating with Phyto-Riker Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd, the owners of the land. He said after some court settlements had been made, the assembly is currently working for the proper acquisition of the land.

The challenges of land ownership notwithstanding, the assembly is currently working to improve drainage in and around the market with the constructions of major drains. This, the MCE noted is a major problem in the market and had to be addressed first to ensure effective reconstruction.

Another constraint that slows down the reconstruction work of the market has to do with lack of space to relocate the traders to enable the contractor to have ample space to work faster. As such, management has to adopt a shift system where traders are pushed to one side to allow construction work on that area. Meanwhile, the first phase of sheds have been completed and handed over to the traders.

The reconstruction of the market would include construction of over 22 sheds with a number of lockable stores and other important facilities that would make the use of the market more convenient to the traders.
