Two technicians of a construction firm hired to mount a mast at Ashalley Botwe, near Madina in Accra for Glo telecommunications firm, yesterday met their deaths when the topmost part of the mast they had mounted got disjointed and fell on them.

They mounted the mast on Tuesday but went there yesterday to "inspect the work" when the incident occured.

The two, who were identified as Thomas Yeboah, 26 and Josephe Sackey,22, were employees of Blum Plus Construction Company Limited, the firm contracted to mount the mast.

Briefing the Times, the Madina Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Paul Ayitey said his outfit had information at about 9:30am yesterday that two workers of the construction firm who were inspecting work on the mast, fell together with part of the mast from the top.

He said Yeboah, died instantly with his eyes popping out while Sackey died on arrival at the Police hospital.

Chief Supt. Ayitey said some workers of the company together with the foreman and the owner of the land on which the mast had been mounted are assisting the police in their investigations.

Warrant Officer Class One (W.O.I) Tewid Issah, the landlord, told the Times that they successfully completed the mounting of the mast on Tuesday and they all jubilated for the accident -free feat.

Interestingly he said while the rest of the workers were jubilating for successful completion of the work, the two deceased workers stood quietly watching their colleagues.

"Even when my wife asked them why they were quiet they did not answer her".

WOI(retired) Issah stated that at a point, the company’s foremen arrived and warned the workers not to climb the mast again saying that he would invite experts to inspect it the next day.

According to WO1 Issah, he was in the room praying at about 8:30 yesterday morning, when he heard a loud noise and when he got out, he saw Yeboah dead while Sackey who was then breathing was quickly taken away by some sympathisers and the police.

WO1 Issah said one of the employees who was alleged to have gone to the place with the two deceased warned them not to climbthe mast because they were asked to wait for the experts examination but they refused.

Contrary to what the landlord said, some eyewitnesses said some experts were there in the morning and said part of the pole were not straight after which the employees were asked to straighten it. They obliged but the third refused to climb saying that he would not risk his life.
