Mr. Mohammed Ackonu, Headmaster of Ahmadiyya Senior High School at Gomoa Potsin, has called on the Gomoa East District Assembly to enforce laws on bush-burning to save life and property during the harmattan season.
He urged every Ghanaian to be a protector of the environment and to report people who start bush fires to the law enforcing agents.
Speaking at Gomoa Potsin, Mr. Ackonu attributed the World-wide climate change which countries were fighting to address to the mismanagement of the environment which includes indiscriminate bush burning.
He described bush burning as one of the greatest challenges the school was grappling with as it was sited in a savannah zone.
According to the Headmaster, sometimes, the whole school got engulfed in smoke from nearby burning bushes which made visibility poor resulting in the suspension of teaching and learning.
"When it happened at night, he said they found it difficult to sleep adding that the situation had been posing a serious health hazard to the staff and students and that all efforts to get the problem redressed have proved futile.
Mr. Ackonu expressed satisfaction with the parents support in checking indiscipline in the school and said that had improved academic work and sports considerably.
"The school authorities do not compromise on indiscipline", the Headmaster stressed.
