The mayhem occurred as a result of a clash over a parcel of land, between the Bauk and Tamung clans who were said to have been engaged in a long -standing feud.

Briefing members of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) on the matter, head of the military and police detachment force deployed to the area, 2nd Lt Daniel Osae Brown said the recurrence of reprisals between the two factions had a remote cause believed to be over chieftancy succession which was currently being handled by the Bunkpuru Chief, but added that the current clash was as a result of a family quarrel.

According to him, a woman from the Tamung clan who married in the Bauk clan had some misunderstanding with the husband and was severely beaten by the younger brother of the husband who accused her of gross disrespect.

She was said to have reported the matter to members of her clan who immediately stormed the mans family house and used the opportunity to settle old scores.

The two clans, reports said, armed themselves to the teeth afterwards, attacking and burning down houses belonging to the opposing clans.

In the process, there was a serious gun battle leading to the death of one woman in her late 50s,identified only as Tanjo Konlan , whose body had since been deposited at the Napkanduri hospital morgue pending autopsy.

Seventy other houses belonging to both factions were also burnt down in the process while a number of property including food barns were destroyed.

All the men in the area fled when the security operatives retrieved a number of live ammunitions from private homes.

The Regional Police Commander, DCOP Ofosu Mensah-Gyeabuor  disclosed that his outfit had gathered from the retrieved ammunitions that the feuding factions were in possession of sophisticated weapons and asked the security agents in the area to ensure that the weapons were all retrieved.

He noted that the continuous handling of these weapons by the civil society could thwart any effort to attain peace in the area warning that anyone caught would be dealt with.

The acting Northern Regional Minister, Joseph M. Dasaana appealed to women in the area not to condone violence, indicating that women and children suffered most in such situations.

He advised them to report suspicious persons to the security agents in the area to ensure that life returned to normal.

Investigations revealed that most residents had fled the area leaving a few women and children who were now seeking refuge with security personnel. Schools in the area had since been closed down.

The Member of Parliament for the area, Kwame Duut Samuel expressed worry over the constant turmoil in the locality and noted that the area would lag behind if residents kept waging  war among themselves. He appealed to them to use dialogue in settling their grievances.
