The Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District has established a Gender Desk in the district to help bridge the gap between male and female and other disadvantaged groups in the society as well as empower them for sustainable development.
The Gender Desk Officer, Ms Fati Abudu, said her branch which was established two years ago, is charged among other things to initiate and execute programmes and activities to sensitise the people to achieve these goals.
"Women in our part of the world especially Northern Ghana, have been denied the opportunity to get involved in decision making not even to challenge certain traditional practices that undermine their human rights. A situation which does not promote growth and development", she said.
The Gender Desk therefore aims at creating a platform for most women to be involved in decision making and take part in educational workshops. Through that, they would also serve as a mouth piece for the vunerable in society and also champion their courses, she stated.
Fati Abudu indicated that the outfit is optimistic that through their efforts child labour, girlchild betrothal, force marriage among other unhealthy practices would be reduced to the bearest minimal.
She announced that there has been improvement in women involment in many areas but noted that more needs to be done, stating that the assembly is the main financeer of their activities with some support from other organisations like DISCUP which provided a motorbike and Action Aid Ghana, hence more finance is required to reach out to more people.
