One person is reported dead of anthrax at Tankroyili, a farming community in the Zabzugu/Tatale District of the Northern Region.

The Zabugu/Tatale District Disease Control Officer, Hussein Abdul-Rashid, who confirmed this to the Times, revealed that a number of people were infected with the disease out of which 24 were in serious conditions.

He however assured that the situation was under control.

Mr Abdul-Rashid attributed the outbreak of the disease to the consumption of carcass of animals infected with the disease which should have been buried.

A symptom of the disease, he said, were complaints of abdominal pains and diarrhoea by those who ate the unwholesome meat.

He said this was confirmed by laboratory reports of specimen of these complainants.

Mr Abdul-Rashid said veterinary officers in the district have embarked on an immunisation exercise in the area.
