A total of 60 participants, including 37 males and 23 females drawn from various communities in the Municipality, were taken through topics such as the Rule of Law, Public Order and Civic Responsibility as well as Channels for Reporting Wrongdoing and Human Rights, among others.
The initiative, implemented under the project: “Civic Engagements on the Rule of Law and the Fight Against Corruption,” aimed at fostering youth-led advocacy and peer education on transparency, accountability, and ethical conduct.
It is being funded by the GIZ and co-funded by the European Union (EU).
Mr Abdulai Abdul-Mugis, the East Mamprusi Municipal Director of the NCCE, explained that the campaign aimed to equip young people with practical knowledge of the Rule of Law, their civic rights, and legal frameworks such as the Whistleblower Act.
“Out-of-school youth remain vulnerable to corrupt practices because of limited access to civic education. This programme seeks to empower them to recognise wrongdoing, report without fear of retaliation, and embrace their civic responsibilities,” he said.
He added that the exercise contributes to Result 2.1 of the action plan: “Increased awareness and sensitisation of the public, including the youth, on anti-corruption, Rule of Law and accountability.”
Mr Sulley Sawyer Salifu, an Investigator with the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) in East Mamprusi, delivering a presentation on the principles of accountability, said the fight against corruption was key for national development.
He emphasised that freedom of expression, association, assembly, and access to information were fundamental rights guaranteed under the 1992 Constitution, and young people must use them responsibly to strengthen democratic governance.
Superintendent Francis Adjei Brobbey, the East Mamprusi Municipal Police Commander speaking on public order and civic responsibilities and balancing rights with public interest, reminded participants that rights go together with responsibilities.
He indicated that the Constitution does not only grant freedoms, but it also enjoined every citizen to respect public order, maintain peace, and contribute to community development.
The workshop also exposed the youth to anti-corruption laws, including the Whistleblower Act, the Special Prosecutor Act, and the Right to Information Act, and encouraged them to play active roles in promoting transparency and accountability at the community level.
