Bank of Ghana holds capacity building for 30 media personnel in Sunyani

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has held a regional capacity building programme for 30 media personnel from Bono, Bono East and Ahafo regions in Sunyani to equip them with deeper understanding of monetary policy, economic trends, and financial concepts aimed at fostering informed reporting and analysis on economic issues, enabling the public to engage in meaningful discussions.

The two days strategic initiative also aimed at promoting a more nuanced understanding of the complex issues involved in monetary policy formulation, ultimately contributing to a more informed public opinion.

Mr. Bernard Otabil, Director of Communications at the Bank of Ghana in his speech said the capacity building was an approach adopted by the bank to engage journalists in a knowledge update session and dialogue on financial and economic issues to boost their understanding of issues they report regularly about the Bank and the economy. “This is also a proactive step to address misinformation and disinformation, which are threats in today’s digital economy”, he said.

The training provide insights into the Bank’s decision-making processes and policies, promotion of better understanding of economic issues that the Bank can help maintain economic stability and promote sustainable growth.

Also the initiative demonstrates the Bank’s commitment to transparency, accountability and public engagement and fosters a stronger relationship between the Bank and the media, thereby promoting more accurate and informed reporting.

Mr. Bernard noted that the work of the media was to inform investor decisions, influence market action and ultimately define the future growth path of the country.

He re-iterated the need for the media to be dedicated to truth and accountability to help shape the financial sector. “Let’s work together to elevate media professionalism and provide the public with accurate, timely and insightful information about the economy”, he stated.

He admonished journalists to eschew diabolic interests that would hurt the country and stay on the course of patriotism.

Madam Regina Benneh Siaw, Bono Chairperson of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) commended the Governor and Management of Bank of Ghana for organizing the proramme to broaden the horizons of Journalists.

She charged participants to bring to bear accuracy, clarity and fact-based reportage at their work. Mr. Frederick Antwi, the Bono East Regional Chairman of GJA also commended the Governor and Management of Bank of Ghana for organizing the proramme and said the training would guide journalists to check misinformation and disinformation regarding the Bank’s data chant out by unprofessional communicators.

Freda Ampedua Abban, a senior TV journalist at GBC for Bono Region said the training met her expectations as it has demystified the jargons often used in economic and financial discussions thereof.

Some of the topics journalists were taken through include Accurate Reporting, Mandate and Regulatory Role of Bank of Ghana, Developments in Foreign Exchange Market, Understanding Inflation Dynamics in Ghana, Understanding Central Bank data pack and Balance Sheet.
