KINTAMPO: Department of Agriculture sensitizes communities on Feed Ghana Project

The Department of Agriculture in the Kintampo Municipality is embarking on community sensitization within the municipality to educate and inform all farmers about the Feed Ghana Project yet to kick start in the country.

Feed Ghana Programme (FGP) is a flagship agricultural initiative launched by the government of Ghana under the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) to drive food self-sufficiency, agribusiness development and support the implementation of the 24-hour economy envisioned by the Government.

An interview with the Kintampo Municipal Director for Agriculture Mr. Eric Kontomah revealed that the sensitization is aimed at informing and educating farmers on the registration process for the formation of farmer-based organizations (FBOs) and cooperatives, including procedures and modalities within the Municipality

He added, it will also upscale awareness, understanding and active participation in the project to enhance their livelihood, increase finance and serve as employment to the youth of the Kintampo Municipality a
nd that, the government on this program is to increase agricultural proactivity and production to reduce importation of food into the country, enhance raw materials supply to agro-industries, to enhance value additions to our farm products, increase agricultural export and to create jobs and wealth.

Over five thousand (5000) farmers participated in the sensitization at the time of this interview and the sensitization is still on-going for both males and females Priority crops for production are cereals and legumes; rice, maize, soybeans, sorghum, vegetables - tomatoes, pepper, and onion.

Others are cassava, yam and plantain.

Livestock: poultry, ruminants (cattle, sheep, and goats) pigs .

Tree crops: mango, shea, cashew, coconut, and oil palm.
