Atebubu marks maiden National Sanitation Day

A three hour clean-up exercise marked the maiden edition of the National Sanitation Day exercise in Atebubu.

Activities which included desilting of gutters, sweeping and weeding locations around the central business district and the municipal hospital was organized by the Atebubu-Amantin municipal assembly in collaboration with stakeholders like the Atebubu Traditional Council, Zoomlion Company Limited, Ralf Blazo ventures a private waste collection concern, government departments, youth and trade groups as well as educational institutions.

Speaking at the end of the exercise, the Omanhene of the Atebubu traditional area Ohempong Yeboah Asiamah who personally took part in the exercise said the exercise goes to complement the traditional council’s effort to get the community cleaned at regular intervals.

He noted that the high incidence of typhoid and cholera in the Atebubu-Amantin municipality underscores the need for improved sanitation and urged all to take issues of sanitation very seriously.

The Atebubu-Amantin municipal chief executive Hon. Thomas Masud Masah Ayarba expressed his gratitude to the Omanhene and other stakeholders who took part in the exercise adding that it will be a regular feature.

He said plans are advanced to evacuate refuse dumps and have containers provided for easier management of waste in the municipality.

The MCE spoke about plans to introduce an initiative called ‘operation clean your frontage’ where everyone will be expected to take charge of cleaning their immediate environment adding that the Environmental Health and Sanitation Unit of the assembly will get offenders prosecuted promptly.

Present were the Member of Parliament for Atebubu-Amantin Hon. Sanja Nanja and the Municipal Coordinating Director Mr. Joseph Tang.
