Akatsi North Pushes for Water System Expansion as Majority Depend on Boreholes

The Akatsi North District is racing against time to secure sustainable water access for its growing population, as new data reveals that boreholes remain the district’s lifeline, yet still far from enough to meet community needs.

With 171 boreholes scattered across the district, about 80% remain functional, serving as the main source of water for most households throughout the year. While dependable, these boreholes cannot meet the rising demand, forcing many residents to fall back on dams and rainwater for domestic use, especially during dry periods.

Currently, piped water serves only the district capital, Ave Dakpa, leaving surrounding communities heavily reliant on groundwater systems. The limited reach of the small-town pipe system highlights a growing infrastructure gap that threatens health, sanitation, and economic growth.

District officials say expanding the water supply system remains one of the most urgent development priorities. Such an expansion would not only improve household access but also boost local businesses especially those whose production processes depend heavily on a steady flow of clean water.

However, authorities warn that replacing the old and aging pipe network is essential for ensuring reliable water delivery once the expansion begins. Without upgrading the system, frequent breakdowns and inconsistent flow are likely to undermine the district’s broader development goals.

As demand increases and the dry season approaches, residents and local leaders are hopeful that a stronger, modernized water system will soon transform lives and fuel economic opportunities across Akatsi North.
