For many traders in the township, the inferno was not only the destruction of goods but also the shattering of years of investment, hope, and livelihood.
In an interview at the fire incident scene Mr. Ibrahim Abdul, a 45-year-old fabric dealer, could not hold back his tears as he narrated how he lost everything.
He had stocked school uniforms and learning materials in anticipation of the new academic term. “By the time I got to the scene after a distress call that night, everything was gone,” he said.
His estimated losses of GH¢200,000.00. “I am appealing to the government and well- meaning Ghanaians to come to our aid,” he added.
Mr. Eliasu Yussif, a 28-year-old boutique operator, also counted his losses, pegging them at GH¢50,000.00.
He said the tragedy had left his family in hardship. “Even food for the family today is a problem,” he lamented, noting that financial assistance was urgently needed to revive his trade.
Another victim, Mr. Sulemana Umar, 45, who dealt in clothing and footwear, described the situation as devastating.
He explained that the fire had wiped out years of hard work and appealed for support from the government, NGOs, and philanthropists to restart his business.
The fire, which broke out late Monday night, spread quickly, consuming goods and property worth thousands of cedis. Though the exact cause of the blaze remains unclear, the impact has been severe, leaving shop owners and their families struggling to cope.
The Kadjebi District Directorate of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has since moved in to assess the damage and take inventory of the affected traders.
NADMO officials are expected to compile a full report and liaise with relevant agencies to determine the next line of action.
