He cautioned that offenders would face prosecution.
The Mayor characterized arbitrary fare increases as unfair, exploitative, and in violation of the Operation of Commercial Vehicles By-laws, 2017 of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).
These by-laws stipulate that "commercial drivers must convey passengers to their destination stations without requiring them to alight and re-board to charge additional fares, and prohibit drivers from charging more than the Assembly-approved rates agreed upon with transport unions."
This warning was issued during a meeting between the Accra Metropolitan Security Council (METSEC) and transport operators on Friday, where they discussed critical issues such as transport fares, road safety, free vehicular movement, sanitation, and security in anticipation of the festive season.

The Mayor announced that starting today, the AMA, in collaboration with the Police, will initiate a special operation targeting drivers who operate outside recognized unions or associations, commonly referred to as floating drivers. He emphasized that these drivers contribute significantly to fare distortions and disorder on the roads.
He stressed the importance of ensuring that this year’s Christmas is peaceful, accident-free, crime-free, and devoid of the usual transport-related challenges that inconvenience the public.
The Mayor declared that the Assembly would no longer tolerate drivers who inflate fares without approval, noting that the AMA Sanitation and Motor Court would be on standby throughout the festive period to prosecute offenders.
“We have one Ghana and one Accra. If we don’t fix our problems, no one will fix them for us,” he stated, urging transport operators to collaborate with city authorities and security agencies to ensure a smooth holiday season.
