LGRD Committee’s call for collaboration between MPs and MMDCEs is not to protect MPs – Oda MP

The Member of Parliament for Akim Oda, and deputy ranking on the Committee on Local Government and Rural Development, Alexander Akwasi Acquah has cautioned that the committee's call for assemblies to effectively liaise with their Members of Parliament should not be misconstrued as over protecting the interest of MPs.

According to him, such collaboration will rather ensure effective administration of the MMDAs and also aid the execution of projects to the benefit of the people

According to him, it is unproductive to put technicalities on the way of MPs to make it impossible for them to function at the district levels.

He asserted that as politicians, they know the power play that goes on at the assembly level, hence the caution is to ensure that the governance structure would serve the purpose for which it's been set up.

Mr Akwesi Acquah who gave the caution at the public hearing of MMDDCEs by the Local Government and Rural Development Committee also reminded authorities at the district Assemblies that, the MP remains a member of the assembly; an ex-officio member who has oversight roles to play and they must be accorded that respect.

One thing that stood out at this public hearing is the relationship between MMDDCEs and their MPs, as the majority of the MMDDCEs were questioned on the involvement of their MPs in the running of the assemblies.

Those who failed to give satisfactory answers were advised to mend their differences with their MPs for growth of their respective districts failure of which sanctions would be applied.
