These were contained in the submission of the Chief of Sonsuaso, Nana Baakuma Yenkyentu I to the Municipal Chief Executive, Mrs. Jerryne Asante during her community engagement.
Nana said the lack of electricity coupled with lack of a descent accommodation for the teachers has compounded the situation of teachers’ inability to stay in the community.
The teacher’s bungalow which was started to accommodate and retain teachers in the community has been left uncompleted for the past eight years. He stressed that due to this, teachers commute from nearby communities such as Abenase and Edwinase to school.
Therefore, rainy days have become automatic holidays for both teachers and pupils because the teachers are not able to make it to school when it rains due to the deplorable nature of the roads. Besides, the basic school is only up to class six (6), leaving pupils with no choice than to travel 9kms to neighbouring communities to access JHS education.
According to Nana Yenkyentu I, young girls however take advantage of the situation and under the guise of accessing JHS education in neighbouring communities to indulge in promiscuous activities; with some abandoning their home altogether to live with their boyfriends in these communities. Many of these girls he said have become victims to teenage pregnancy, while others have not been able to continue school after primary six; hence, his plea to the MCE and the assembly to help construct a JHS in the community as a matter of urgency.
The MCE on her part reiterated that the love the populace demonstrated to her, the NDC and President John Dramani Mahama during the 2024 elections she cannot turn her back to them at this time. Instead she would see to it as a matter of urgency that the electricity issues, construction JHS block and the teachers’ quarters are done within the shortest possible time.
