Bolgatanga East Residents Push For Revival Of Zuarungu Meat Factory, Smock Market

Residents of the Bolgatanga East District in the Upper East Region have called for the revival of the defunct Zuarungu Meat Factory and the establishment of a modern smock market to boost economic activity and create jobs.

The residents believe the two initiatives would provide employment opportunities, particularly for the youth, while strengthening the local economy.

The Zuarungu Meat Factory, formerly operated by GIHOC Zuarungu Meat Product Company Limited, was inaugurated in 1965 to produce canned beef for the domestic and export markets. It was, however, closed in 1995 following years of operation.

According to the report, the Bolgatanga East District Assembly has been pursuing efforts to revive the factory, with the Upper East Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu, disclosing that the Ministries of Food and Agriculture and Trade and Industry were engaging a private investor to explore the possibility of revamping the facility.

The District Chief Executive, David Akolgo Amoah, also disclosed plans by the Assembly to establish a modern smock market at Zuarungu to bring together people engaged in smock weaving and sewing.

He said the initiative would help expand the smock business, create jobs and generate additional revenue for the Assembly.

Residents and smock producers welcomed the proposed interventions, saying a dedicated market could attract tourists and customers while creating opportunities for more young people to venture into the trade.

The DCE further expressed optimism that reviving the meat factory, where land, equipment and other facilities are already available, could create thousands of jobs for unemployed youth in the district.
