The Municipal Chief executive, Alfredos Anyetei who expressed worry that a significant portion of the lagoon has already been encroached upon said people are determined to continue the illegal act and so the time to act is now to save the lagoon.

"The Kpeshie Lagoon buffer zone shouldn't be encroached on because that is ecological site; one of our ramsar sites where water from the Aburi Mountain areas is collected", he emphasized.

According to Mr. Alfredos Anyetei, latest next week, this demolishing would take place and urged people to advise themselves before the law catches up with them.

The MCE admitted that the encroachment on the Kpeshie Lagoon has been a thorny issue in the municipality over the years and many interventions were tried but little success was achieved as even at present people are still filling up spaces for construction.

He opined that the continues encroachment if not averted can lead to major flooding in the municipality, adding that they can no longer sit to for people to behave as they like.

“Just over the weekend, I got calls and messages that people were selling land at the encroached area; and this is pathetic”, he stated.

He warned the public from buying lands from that area as the place is not for human habitation, and that the Assembly hence forth would not allow anyone to build there.

To this end, he said developers have been served notice to halt every activity around the lagoon, and some structures have been earmarked for demolishing to send a strong signal to the populace since people don't seem to be deterred by all the warnings issued to them.

DREDGING/WAYFORWARD

Going forward, the MCE disclosed that the Assembly is engaging some companies to help dredge the lagoon to make it suitable to collect more water; while looking for investors to put the lagoon to other uses particularly for tourism.
