Mr. Freeman Tsekpo, the Ashaiman Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), made the announcement during the unveiling of a redevelopment roadmap for the market.
“We do not want a market that reflects the old system, where traders dealing in fish, pepper, and vegetables lack proper spaces,” he stated.
The event was attended by members of the Ashaiman Divisional Council, led by Annang Adjor Amui III, Chief of Ashaiman, alongside market women and local government officials.
Addressing concerns over congestion and roadside trading, Mr. Tsekpo acknowledged the current disorderly conditions and outlined plans for a redesigned market layout featuring an open-space and shed system.
He explained that consultations with local and regional stakeholders had informed the decision to increase the number of sheds where space allows to ensure inclusivity.
According to him, the redevelopment will provide traders currently operating along roadsides with designated and dignified spaces within the new market structure.
Mr. Tsekpo disclosed that President John Dramani Mahama has directed that the project be completed within 15 to 18 months, with the aim of commissioning it ahead of the 2028 general elections. He contrasted this timeline with past infrastructure projects that stalled for years, resulting in wasted public resources.
The MCE assured traders that the project is fully government-funded, not a private investment venture, and therefore spaces in the completed market will be affordable.
“The funding is not coming from private investors who would charge exorbitant fees for stalls. This is a government initiative, and pricing will be fair,” he emphasised.
He noted that Ashaiman is a major commercial hub and that trading activities cannot be halted during construction. To address this, the Assembly will adopt a phased redevelopment approach, allowing work to continue in sections while trading goes on in others.
He further revealed that land provided by the African Advance family will serve as a temporary site to accommodate traders during the construction period.
Mr. Tsekpo expressed confidence that through collaboration and unity, the municipality will successfully implement a 24-hour economy model capable of sustaining business activities both day and night.
Nii Amui III, Chief of Ashaiman, called on market women and residents to support the Assembly to ensure the successful execution of the project. He urged all stakeholders to cooperate fully to minimise implementation challenges.
