Central Tongu District Assembly's Tourism and Culture: Untapped Potential and Pathways to Growth

Among the most notable opportunities are the Avakpedome tourist site, which holds cultural and natural appeal, and the district’s expansive sandy beaches that stretch along its coastline. The area also hosts two sizable islands, Awadiwoekome and Siamekome, which offer potential for eco-tourism, boat tours, and community-led experiences that spotlight local traditions and ecosystems.
Industry observers note that hospitality is an area with clear growth prospects. The district currently hosts a small but recognizable hospitality cluster, including properties such as Suncity, Esenam Hotel, Ronna Guest House, and Salem Hotel in Adidome. While these establishments provide essential services for visitors and business travelers, there is scope to expand lodging capacity, improve service standards, and develop complementary attractions that can keep tourists longer and encourage repeat visits. Beyond formal accommodations, various guest houses and rest stops have historically served travelers and dignitaries visiting the district, reflecting a community readiness to integrate tourism with local commerce and governance.
Efforts to unlock tourism potential will require coordinated investment in infrastructure, capacity building, and marketing. Plans may include developing attractions around Avakpedome, enhancing beach safety and environmental sustainability on sandy shorelines, and promoting the island experiences of Awadiwoekome and Siamekome through community-operated programs and responsible tourism practices. Strengthening collaboration among public institutions, private entrepreneurs, and local communities will be crucial to ensure that growth benefits reach a broad segment of residents, including farmers, artisans, and youth.
Cultural initiatives could also play a pivotal role in enriching the visitor experience. Showcasing local crafts, music, dance, and storytelling can deepen tourists’ connections to Central Tongu’s heritage while creating new revenue streams for artisans and performers. With careful planning, training, and investment, the district could position itself as a distinctive destination that complements Ghana’s national tourism attractions.
Residents and visitors alike are encouraged to support local tourism development by exploring district attractions, patronizing hospitality venues, and participating in community-led cultural events. Partnerships between the District Assembly, tourism operators, and local communities will be essential to establish sustainable tourism that respects the environment and benefits livelihoods.
