KMA desilts WAEC storm drain

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), under the leadership of the Mayor, Hon. Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi, has embarked on a major desilting exercise of the WAEC storm drain with support from inmates of the Kumasi Central Prisons.

The exercise aims to address frequent blockages caused by plastics, polythene, and other waste materials washed into the drains whenever it rains.

According to the Environmental Health Unit, these blockages often disrupt the smooth flow of stormwater, requiring regular intervention by KMA.

The Mayor directed the exercise following reports of increased dumping of rice husks, animal feed, and other refuse into the drains by traders and residents.

To curb the situation, KMA has installed a mesh at the extreme end of the drain to prevent waste from reaching the roads and causing unsightly scenes.

Going forward, KMA, in collaboration with NADMO, will engage traders and residents along the drains to educate them on proper waste disposal and discourage illegal dumping, especially at night.

Additionally, strict enforcement measures will be taken, and anyone caught dumping refuse into the drains will be arrested and prosecuted.
