The Birim Central Assembly has completed the first phase of the rehabilitation work on the Akim Oda main lorry park.
The project has increased the Assembly revenue from the lorry park, and has also led to a reduction in traffic on the main Akim Oda road, caused by drivers who decide to load by the road side because of the deplorable nature of the lorry park
Speaking to newsmen in an interview at Akim Oda, the Municipal Engineer, Mr Alex Tetteh said the 408,000-Ghana-Cedi project, was financed through the District Assembly Common Fund.
The Municipal Engineer said the rehabilitation work included an earthwork, laying of pavement blocks and the construction of drains.
He said the second phase of the project which involves the construction of 146 lockable market stores at the lorry park, under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP), is at the completion stage, to cater for the ever-increasing trader population in the Municipality.
Mr Tetteh said the project which was started in August 2012, at the estimated cost of GH¢ 1, 500,000, is being funded by the Assembly and three private construction firms, namely, F Nkansah Company, Ako Nana Construction Works and Equipman Company Limited.
He said the third phase of the project would involve the construction of a passengers’ lounge at the lorry park, and a toll booth at Akyem Odumase at the cost of GH¢ 168, 000
Leadership of the various transport unions using the lorry park commended the Assembly for the lorry park project, and said the deplorable nature of the lorry park was such that some commercial vehicles have stopped operating at the station, and began loading at the road side.
This situation, they said, has created both vehicular and human traffic.
This came to light through the Media Auditing and Tracking of development project, being funded by STAR-Ghana, a multi-donor organization.
