Berekum Senior High School (SHS) needs additional facilities to improve teaching and learning for quality and affordable education, Mr Ebenezer Kwagyir Ayensu, Headmaster, has said.

Addressing a meeting of Berekum SHS Old Students’ Association (BESSOSA) he said the school needed classroom blocks, students and staff accommodation, Library and Information and Communication Technology centre and science laboratory.

Mr Ayensu expressed worry about acute water shortage in the school and said “I always feel very sad when I see our young boys and girls carrying gallons in search of water, sometimes as early as 0400 hours.”

He said this was having a negative impact on the studies of the students and appealed to the Berekum Municipal Assembly and all stakeholders to assist the school to overcome these difficulties.

Mr. George Yeboah, the Senior Housemaster, said the school did not have an Assembly Hall because the existing had been converted into a dining hall and a boys’ dormitory.

He said the school had 1,600 students with 1,000 of them in boarding house but it is finding it difficult to house them conveniently due to lack of adequate boarding facilities.

Mr Yeboah said out of the 75 teaching staff, only 15 of them are accommodated in semi-detached bungalows and out-houses on campus.
