Residents in the Obuasi Municipality were full of smiles yesterday when the Minister of Transport Alhaji Collins Dauda inaugurated an airport in the area.

The Airport which cost $4 million was financed by AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) and would be managed by Gianair Limited, a local aviation company on behalf of AGA.

The facility has a terminal building, welcome area, arrival and departure halls, garage facilities for emergency response vehicles, a manager’s office and a runway of 1600metres by 30m with one meter width shoulders on the either side.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Alhaji Dauda said the aviation, apart from being a mode of transportation for perhaps the elite group, was crucial for sustainable development of trade and tourism.

He however commended the AGA for the project and called on other organization to do the same.

Okofo Sobin Kan II, Dompoasehene and Acting President of the Adansi Traditional Council who presided over the function called for community support in eradicating illegal mining in the area.
