The majority of these farmers are small-scale, relying on rain-fed agriculture and traditional farming methods. The district’s main food crops include maize, cassava, rice, plantain, and coconut. In addition, vegetables such as tomatoes, garden eggs, okro, and pepper are widely cultivated. Industrial crops like cocoa, oil palm, citrus, coffee, and cashew are also grown, contributing to both local consumption and trade.
The Department of Agriculture oversees farming activities in the district and provides a range of support services. These include agricultural extension services, veterinary care, group formation, home and field visits, technical training, on-farm demonstrations, and pest and disease control.
Out of 8,024 households engaged in agriculture, 7,887 are involved in crop farming, making it the most common agricultural activity. Livestock rearing follows with 2,318 households participating. Other activities include tree planting and fish farming, though these are less prevalent.
Officials emphasize the importance of modernizing agriculture in the district to improve productivity and resilience. Efforts are underway to introduce improved farming techniques and expand access to agricultural support services.
As the district continues to grow, agriculture remains a vital pillar of its economy and a key to its future development.
