The DCE made the call during a community clean-up exercise organised across parts of the district, bringing together Assembly staff, NADMO personnel, local leaders, youth groups, traders and residents.

The exercise focused on addressing some of the major sanitation challenges confronting communities, including desilting choked gutters, clearing overgrown weeds and removing accumulated refuse from public spaces and residential areas.

The clean-up covered key locations within the district, including the Nyinahin Market, Zongo, Kyerayaso Nkwanta and sections of the Nyinahin Nkwanta Road.

Speaking during the exercise, DCE Isshaq Ibrahim stressed that maintaining a clean environment should not be left solely to the District Assembly or sanitation workers.

He urged residents, traders and community leaders to take responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean and to desist from practices such as indiscriminate dumping of refuse into gutters and other public spaces.

According to the DCE, poor sanitation and improper waste disposal can create breeding grounds for disease-carrying insects and contribute to the spread of preventable diseases such as malaria and cholera.

He warned that continued laxity in waste management could pose serious risks to public health, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall when choked drains can result in flooding and stagnant water.

The DCE therefore encouraged residents to make regular environmental sanitation part of their daily activities and support the Assembly’s efforts to maintain clean and healthy communities.

The participation of various groups in the exercise, he said, demonstrates the importance of community ownership and collective action in addressing sanitation challenges.

He assured residents that the Assembly would continue to engage communities and mobilise stakeholders to improve environmental cleanliness across the Atwima Mponua District.
