Shama district checks falling standard of education

The Shama District Directorate of Education on Thursday held a meeting to review the performance of schools with a call on the community to support the schools to check the falling standards of education in the District.

Mr Enoch Kojo Appiah, the Shama District Chief Executive, said education was a shared responsibility among teachers, parents/guardians and the community therefore each must play effective role to help mould the character of students for them to put up good academic performance.

The meeting was attended by educationists, traditional authorities, civil societies, religious leaders and assembly members.

Mr Appiah said though education was free communities, especially the churches and traditional authorities must play complementary roles by visiting schools to know their problems with the view to assisting them.

Mr Appiah said the churches must go beyond praying for students during examination by periodically counseling them to exhibit good character.

He said education can never be totally free as assumed by some people therefore appealed to parents and guardians to provide basic needs of their children. Mr Appiah urged the school authorities to ensure strict supervision of teachers.

He described as unacceptable the72.2 percent recorded during 2013 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) as against that of the 2012 of 57 percent and prayed for improved performance.

Mrs Esther Bossman-Ammah, the District Education Director, appealed to parents and guardians to monitor their wards for direction a rather create congenial atmosphere for them to enjoy staying at home to learn.
