Participants were drawn from all the seven (7) Assemblies that constitute the Greater Kumasi Area and a representative from VNG International.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr. Simon Osei Mensah delivering his speech stated that, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly’s objective is to collectively design interventions that will comprehensively address the congestion of Kumasi and improve the living standards of dwellers in the selected slum, adding that upon series of stakeholder consultations, the Assembly has selected decongestion and slum upgrading as core areas of interest to be addressed.

He noted that three-pronged complementary measures have been outlined to holistically mitigate the issue of congestion at the CBD by creating a system that will effectively commute passengers and frights in and out of the CBD, improve the quality of satellite markets to attract traders all over and also put up a multi-storey car park to reduce on street parking.

The Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly Mr. Samuel Pyne, on his part, underscored the need to permanently find a lasting solution to address the congestion at the CBD and ultimately help to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 11; which seeks to make cities human settlements safe, resilient, inclusive and sustainable.

“I found the project very intriguing since it is in line with one of my key focal areas of interest for the Metropolis; which is to decongest the CBD without compromising on its current architecture and economic viability”, he added.

He then called on the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) to coordinate and monitor the implementation of the agreed activities in the signed MOUs with the adjoining Municipalities to ensure sustainability of the project.
