ASUTIFI: Newmont awards GH¢3,664,739 scholarship to students
Newmont Ahafo Development Foundation (NADeF), has awarded scholarships estimated at about GH¢1,638,460 to 1,455 students in the mine take communities during the 2012/2013 academic year.
They were made up of 596 females and 859 males.
Within the past four years, the Foundation had provided scholarships estimated at about GH¢3, 664,739.01 to 3,790 students.
NADeF is a development fund set up by the Management of Ahafo Mine of Newmont Ghana Gold Limited at Kenyasi in the Asutifi District of Brong-Ahafo Region to support community development in and around the 10 mine take communities.
A statement issued by Mr Joseph Danso, Executive Secretary of the Foundation and copied to Ghana News Agency in Sunyani on Tuesday said 760 of the students were in senior high schools while 432 are pursuing various programmes in tertiary institutions.
In addition, NADeF is sponsoring 263 youth from the host communities to undergo skill training in carpentry, dressmaking, hairdressing, auto-mechanics and light vehicle operations.
The statement said all these interventions were part of efforts to develop the human resource base of the mine take communities.
It gave the assurance that the Foundation would continue to work with its development partners to optimise resources towards quality human resource development.
