AMA: Gov’t marks 100 days of Prez Mills demise

Late prez Mills

President John Dramani Mahama on Wednesday led state and government functionaries to mark 100 days of the death of late President John Evans Atta Mills at the ‘Asomdwe Park" in Accra with a wreath laying ceremony.

With solemn hymns rendered by the Ghana Armed Forces band in the background, President Mahama laid a wreath on behalf of the government and people of Ghana, the former First Lady, Mrs Ernestina Naadu Mills, with tears dropping down her cheek, laid one on behalf of the family, while Mr Henry Martey Newman, Chief of Staff laid another on behalf of Presidential staffers.

Ms Sherry Ayitey, Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, and Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), laid wreaths on behalf of Ministers of State and NDC members respectively.

The solemn ceremony, attended by First Lady, Mrs Lordina Mahama, Ministers of State, Members of Parliament and executive members of the NDC, began with a national anthem, an opening prayer, the blowing of the last post and the observance of two minutes silence in memory of the late President Mills.

President Mahama said the 100th anniversary of the departure of President Mills was brought back because of the exigency of the election period, describing him as a noble and great leader, who was his father, teacher and mentor.

“We thank God for his life and what he has done for Ghana,” he said.

“As an academician, Prof Mills was missed by his students. As the head of the tax agency, the people there missed, and as a politician, the whole Ghana misses him,” he said.

He also described him as a man of humility, peace, tolerance and civility in speech and hoped that the late President Mills’s attributes would guide the conduct of politics in the country.

The President pledged to continue to honour and immortalize the late President Mills in subsequent years.
