TANO S: NADMO undertakes agric project

The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) in the Tano South District Assembly in the Brong Ahafo Region has indeed taken disaster management into another level by delving into the agricultural sector.

The programme seeks to bring more farmers in the district under one umbrella to undertake block farming system in their various towns and the produce brought together to be sold to marketers or matrons of the school feeding programme at a fair price. This will help to create more jobs and to improve on the economic lives of the people.

As part of the programme, farm inputs such as Wallington boots, cutlasses, and pesticides among others would be provided the farmers to make their work easier.

Mr. Christian Tetteh, Tano South NADMO Coordinator who doubles as the Assemblyman for Bechem Junction Electoral Area who disclosed this in an interview with Ghanadistricts.com said the programme begun last year on a pilot base in four zones but after its success they thought it wise to expand it to cover all the 14 zones in the district.

He indicated that although the programme has not been all that rosy, they have succeeded in cultivating about 102 acres of land for beans.

On some of the success stories, Mr. Tetteh said last year, farmers in Derma and Dumor towns harvested 15 and 10 bags of cowpea respectively; Ankase also nursed about 14,000 cocoa seedlings which they sold to farmers in need of them.

On challenges, Mr. Tetteh said they have been faced with land acquisition problems but he expressed optimism that due to the success he believes more o people will be attracted to it in order to avert the problem.
